Stuck in a February Slump? Here’s how to snap out of it and make 2019 your best year yet!

After the excitement of Christmas, many of us find the New Year a struggle, and for those of us over-40, it may feel like the year is already getting away from us. Whether you’ve just recovered from the January blues, or are continuing to find February and the year ahead a little daunting, the following guide will help you navigate this tricky time and move forward with a productive and happy 2019.

Assess Where You Are Now

Identifying where we are in the present moment is not always easy or comfortable, especially if it’s miles away from where we’d like to be. There are always things we’d rather change, and accepting this can feel downright disheartening. But it’s also a major step towards changing things for the better. Whether it’s your personal life, your professional life or a little bit of everything that’s causing you distress, don’t ignore it. That nagging feeling of discontent can be a great motivator if you pay attention to it and use it to propel you forwards.

Target Your Goals

February can understandably leave you feeling a little aimless. Your New Year’s Resolutions may have long been abandoned, leaving in their wake a bit of a void. Yet there’s no need to despair, or to abandon all your hopes and dreams for the year ahead. You simply need to adjust them for the here and now, and prioritise what truly matters for 2019.

Consider carefully what you hope to achieve this year. For the moment, forget the individual steps you’ll take to get there, and instead opt for a ‘big picture’ approach. Writing your aspirations down is a major first step to getting out in the world and making them happen.

Be Kind to Yourself

Life isn’t all about rushing from one goal to the next. Taking time out for simply ‘being’ is essential, and will help centre you when things feel like they’re getting too much.

Tip: Practice deep breathing exercises (through your nose and out through your mouth), to take care of your mental health and wellbeing.

Seek Guidance

If you don’t feel like you can do everything by yourself, you’re not alone. There are lots of resources at your disposal designed to help make getting what you want from life much less daunting. Whatever stage of midlife you’re at, we all struggle with finding contentment and purpose in life. Never be afraid to ask for help when you need it, and seek out the wisdom of those you trust when you need a little extra motivation. Joining an online community like 9 to 5 Freedom Seekers or Healthy Fit Fabulous could provide just the push you need to make this your best year yet!
